Ensembles Directors

Ensembles are either directed by professional musicians or passionate members of the music societies who themselves are extremely talented. As Music at QMUL continues to develop, so too do its Ensemble Directors, who become part of the QMUL community themselves.

Toby Nelms

The Big Band is directed by Toby Nelms. Toby was awarded the Henry Wood Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music where his teachers included Jonathan Cole, Haris Kittos and Mike Moran. As a jazz soloist, Toby has held residencies in London and further afield, most notably the Savoy Hotel. Toby plays with a number of groups including his own Street-Nelms Jazz Quartet. Recent performances include at Clarence House for HRH The Prince of Wales and this year at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Late Night Prom series. As a composer Toby was awarded first prize in the 2013 Polonsky Foundation competition for his work 'A Lost Child'.

Matthew Hardy

The Choir of Barts and The London is directed by Matthew Hardy. Matthew studied trumpet and conducting at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2013 with first class honours. He is active as a trumpet player and in demand as a brass teacher and coach. He has a particular interest in teaching, having studied for the last few years with renowned Danish pedagogue Kristian Steenstrup. He is the musical director of six groups in London: UCL Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Orchestra of North London, Choir of Barts and The London Music Society, East London Community Band, Pinsent Masons Choir, and his own professional ensemble, East London Music Group.
